Mohamadou Kanté Attracting France U21 Interest After West Ham Breakthrough

Mohamadou Kanté is reportedly attracting attention from France Under-21s after establishing himself in West Ham United’s first-team squad.

RMC Sport report that the 21-year-old midfielder is on the radar of the French youth set-up following his breakthrough under Nuno Espírito Santo.

Kanté was born in Paris and is also eligible to represent Senegal. The report does not suggest he has received a France call-up or made a decision over his international future.

His form for West Ham has nevertheless strengthened his case.

The club’s official player profile shows Kanté has scored three Championship goals this season, while he has featured in all eight of West Ham’s league matches and started four.

His latest came after entering at half-time against Millwall, when he helped spark West Ham’s comeback from 2-0 down before later being sent off.

That dismissal means he will miss QPR, with our Kanté suspension guide explaining when he can return.

RMC also report that Fiorentina and a prominent French club showed interest in Kanté during the summer, but West Ham rejected the approaches because they wanted to give the midfielder his opportunity.

That decision is already looking significant.

West Ham are also reportedly considering rewarding his progress with improved terms, despite Kanté already being under contract until 2031, as covered in our latest Kanté contract update.

Attention from France’s youth set-up would represent another indication of how quickly Kanté’s status has changed in east London.
