West Ham’s Mads Hermansen keeps clean sheet as Denmark bounce back from Portugal defeat

West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen kept a clean sheet as Denmark beat Wales 1-0 in Cardiff on Sunday night.

Rasmus Højlund’s 75th-minute penalty settled the Nations League meeting, giving Brian Riemer’s side a positive finish to this international window.

Hermansen retained his starting place after Thursday’s 4-2 defeat by Portugal, when he made six saves despite conceding four goals.

This time, Denmark gave their goalkeeper a much firmer platform. FotMob’s full-time figures show Wales managed five attempts and just 0.19 expected goals, compared with Denmark’s 13 shots and 2.20 xG.

The decisive moment came after Danny Ward brought down Gustav Isaksen inside the penalty area, with Højlund converting the resulting spot-kick.

The Welsh FA’s match coverage also recorded earlier opportunities for the hosts, including Brennan Johnson firing over and Mark Harris failing to connect with a cross.

Those moments underline the distinction between a clean sheet and a goalkeeper having to rescue his side. Denmark restricted the quality of the chances Wales created, and Hermansen benefited from that collective defensive work.

For West Ham supporters, the encouraging development is that he followed a difficult scoreline against Portugal with another start and a shutout.

Riemer had used Filip Jørgensen in Denmark’s opening two matches of the window before turning to Hermansen against Portugal.

Two consecutive starts give the Hammers goalkeeper a stronger finish to his international spell, with club football now returning to the agenda.
