West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos helped Greece hold Germany to a 0-0 draw on Sunday, completing a Nations League double-header in which the Greeks took four points from Jürgen Klopp’s side.
Mavropanos started in Thessaloniki and played 79 minutes before Panagiotis Retsos replaced him, with the match still goalless.
Greece had won the reverse fixture 1-0 a week earlier. Sunday’s draw leaves them on eight points after four group matches, level on points with the Netherlands and three ahead of Germany.
Mavropanos helps Greece withstand Germany pressure
FotMob’s match figures show Germany finished with 70 per cent possession and 21 attempts, although those shots produced a combined 1.05 expected goals.
Greece therefore spent much of the evening without the ball but prevented Germany from turning their territorial advantage into a winning goal.
The German FA’s report confirms Jonathan Burkardt had a first-half effort disallowed for handball in the build-up.
The hosts also carried a threat, with Giorgos Masouras having headed opportunities in both halves.
For West Ham, Mavropanos’s involvement offers another competitive outing before the Championship resumes. His substitution alone does not establish an injury, and the match record does not explain the change.
