Konstantinos Mavropanos has played down the discomfort he felt against Germany, offering West Ham encouragement before Friday’s meeting with QPR.
The defender also revealed that he apologised to Greece’s coaching staff after reacting to his substitution during Sunday’s goalless Nations League draw.
Mavropanos made way for Panagiotis Retsos late in the match, but his subsequent comments suggest he was less concerned about the problem than his withdrawal might have indicated.
Asked whether he had been in pain, Mavropanos told Greek media, as reported by Sport FM: “I was in a little pain, but it’s nothing significant. Everything is fine.”
That quotation is translated from Greek. He also described the substitution as a misunderstanding and praised Retsos for his contribution.
Mavropanos explains apology before West Ham’s QPR return
In separate post-match remarks carried by Gazzetta, Mavropanos acknowledged that he had overreacted and said he went straight to the coaching staff to apologise.
He explained that his desire to give everything for Greece, combined with the adrenaline of the match, had influenced his reaction.
For West Ham supporters, the most useful development is his own reassuring assessment of the discomfort.
However, those comments do not establish his availability to face QPR. A club update would provide a firmer picture before Nuno Espirito Santo settles on his defence.
The Hammers host QPR at London Stadium on Friday, 9 October, with kick-off at 8pm. Our West Ham v QPR team news page brings together the injury and suspension picture before the Championship return.
