Kanté red card ban: QPR consequence confirmed

Mohamadou Kante suspension

Mohamadou Kanté is set to miss West Ham United’s first match after the international break following his red card against Millwall.

The midfielder was dismissed late in Saturday’s dramatic 2-2 draw at The Den after bringing down Kyrell Lisbie outside the penalty area.

Kanté was shown a straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Under FA disciplinary regulations, that offence carries an automatic one-match suspension.

That means Kanté is set to miss West Ham’s Championship meeting with Queens Park Rangers before becoming available again for the trip to Lincoln City.

How many games will Mohamadou Kanté miss for West Ham?

Kanté’s red card carries a one-match suspension.

The FA’s disciplinary regulations distinguish denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity from offences such as serious foul play and violent conduct, which ordinarily carry three-match suspensions.

Kanté’s suspension is therefore:

  • Suspended: West Ham vs Queens Park Rangers, Friday 9 October
  • Available to return: Lincoln City vs West Ham, Wednesday 14 October
  • Length: One match

Barring any subsequent disciplinary development, the QPR fixture should therefore be the only West Ham match Kanté misses as a result of his dismissal at The Den.

Kanté goes from West Ham hero to red card

The dismissal completed an eventful second half for Kanté.

West Ham had trailed Millwall 2-0 at half-time before the 21-year-old scored in the 73rd minute to begin the comeback.

Konstantinos Mavropanos then equalised six minutes later as Nuno Espírito Santo’s side recovered to claim a point.

Kanté’s late dismissal forced West Ham to finish the contest with ten men, however, and now creates an immediate selection issue for Nuno when Championship football resumes.

Who could replace Kanté against QPR?

The international break gives Nuno time to consider his midfield options ahead of QPR’s visit to London Stadium.

Arne Engels remains a major part of those plans after playing the full match at Millwall.

The Belgian has subsequently spoken about West Ham’s mentality during their second-half comeback.

Soungoutou Magassa provides another option after returning to the matchday squad at The Den, while the fitness of Tomáš Souček could also influence Nuno’s decision.

West Ham therefore have alternatives, but Kanté’s absence is significant after his impact against Millwall.

When can Kanté play for West Ham again?

Kanté is set to become available again when West Ham travel to face Lincoln City on Wednesday, 14 October.

That comes five days after the QPR fixture.

The midfielder will therefore have to wait until the second game of West Ham’s busy post-international-break run to return to domestic action.
