West Ham United have officially confirmed Aaron Wan-Bissaka has joined Aston Villa on loan, with the deal containing an obligation to become permanent if certain conditions are met.
The 28-year-old will spend the remainder of the 2026/27 season at Villa Park after West Ham sanctioned his departure from Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad.
West Ham have not disclosed the value of the potential permanent transfer or the conditions which would activate Villa’s obligation.
Wan-Bissaka leaves east London after making 65 appearances since joining from Manchester United in the summer of 2024.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaves West Ham for Aston Villa
Wan-Bissaka’s departure brings an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future.
West Ham had previously valued the defender at around £25million and rejected a significantly lower approach from Lazio earlier in the summer.
A number of clubs subsequently monitored his situation before Aston Villa moved ahead.
The structure of the final agreement is notable.
Rather than receiving a guaranteed permanent fee immediately, West Ham have accepted a season-long loan containing a conditional obligation to buy.
The exact financial return will therefore depend on Villa meeting the undisclosed conditions attached to the deal.
Wan-Bissaka originally joined West Ham from Manchester United for around £15m in August 2024.
His first season proved particularly successful, with supporters voting him Hammer of the Year.
His position became less certain following West Ham’s relegation and the subsequent overhaul of Nuno’s squad.
Kyle Walker-Peters ready to take West Ham role
West Ham already have an established replacement available at right-back.
Kyle Walker-Peters started the Championship opener against Burnley and is expected to continue on the right against Charlton on Saturday.
Our latest West Ham predicted XI has Walker-Peters retaining his starting place as Nuno prepares for his first home league match of the season.
Wan-Bissaka’s exit also removes another senior salary as West Ham continue reshaping the squad before the transfer window closes.
The Hammers will now wait to discover whether the conditions required to turn his Aston Villa loan into a permanent transfer are fulfilled.
