West Ham eye January move for Bundesliga defender as German report casts doubt on price

West Ham reportedly remain interested in Rav van den Berg, with Köln prepared to consider suitable offers for the out-of-favour defender.

German outlet Express reports that the Hammers retain a strong interest after an unsuccessful summer approach.

The 22-year-old sits fourth in Köln’s centre-back hierarchy, leaving a possible route back to England when the January window opens.

West Ham Rav van den Berg links gather pace

Van den Berg’s situation gives West Ham a potential opportunity, although the reporting does not establish that a deal is close.

Express suggests Köln would listen to appropriate proposals. However, it also questions figures above €15million circulating around a possible transfer.

That matters when assessing suggestions of a £13m move. There is no confirmed asking price or agreement in the reports.

Kölnische Rundschau’s separate coverage says no concrete offer is known and notes that the defender remains under contract until 2030.

Koppen has outlined a selective January approach

The link comes after Nils Koppen explained West Ham’s January recruitment plans.

West Ham’s recruitment director expects targeted business following the summer rebuild, with scouting priorities narrowed during November and December.

He did not name Van den Berg or identify centre-back as a priority in those comments.

The former Middlesbrough defender’s Championship experience makes the reported interest understandable. His lack of recent football would also require careful assessment if West Ham want somebody ready to contribute immediately.

For now, this is a potential January opening, with the fee and any formal approach still to be established.
