West Ham would need to offer Max Dowman regular football in his preferred position to secure any loan from Arsenal, according to a new report.
Hammers News claims the Hammers made tentative summer enquiries and asked Arsenal to keep them informed, citing an unnamed source familiar with their transfer plans.
The report says Arsenal opposed a summer loan and have not told West Ham their stance will change in January.
The playing-time condition would therefore apply only if the Gunners decided to make Dowman available.
Max Dowman to West Ham would raise a selection question
Claret and Hugh’s assessment of the link highlights the difficulty of accommodating another right-sided attacker when Jarrod Bowen occupies that role.
Dowman can also operate centrally, but Divine Mukasa already offers Nuno Espírito Santo an option there.
Our view is that West Ham would need a clear role for any incoming attacking loanee. Simply providing cover would be difficult to reconcile with a requirement for regular football.
Mukasa is one of four senior players West Ham recruited on loan this summer, underlining how temporary deals have already shaped Nuno’s squad.
Recruitment director Nils Koppen has outlined a selective approach to January business, with discussions alongside Nuno helping identify potential improvements.
His public comments did not name specific targets. They therefore provide context for West Ham’s planning, without confirming a move for Dowman.
