West Ham signed Austbø to unlock stubborn defences, Koppen explains

West Ham signed Edvin Austbø with a specific attacking challenge in mind: creating chances against opponents who defend deep.

Nils Koppen has explained how the Norwegian’s sharp acceleration and ability in crowded areas helped persuade the club to bring him from Viking.

In Iron Cast comments reported by Hammers News, the recruitment director highlighted Austbø’s ability to make an impact when space is limited.

“He’s not a runner who sprints past everyone over 30 or 40 meters, but he is quick and sharp,” Koppen said.

Why West Ham targeted Edvin Austbø

Koppen explained that West Ham used match data to assess the winger’s chance creation against a low block, where opponents sit close to their own goal.

His reasoning centred on the type of football the Hammers expect to play in the Championship, with possession often bringing the challenge of breaking down a crowded defence.

Koppen also pointed to Austbø’s ability to operate on either flank, giving Nuno Espírito Santo flexibility in his attacking selections.

Derby cameo offered an early glimpse

Austbø has already demonstrated his ability to influence a game from the bench.

He scored and supplied an assist against Derby County, helping West Ham turn a narrow advantage into a 3-0 victory.

The Norwegian replaced Manor Solomon in the closing stages, scored the second goal and then set up Mohamadou Kanté for the third.

That contribution offered an early example of the attacking variety West Ham wanted from their summer arrival.
