  • West Ham were defeated 3-0 by Brentford on Saturday
  • The Hammers are back in the Premier League relegation zone following the result
  • Alan Shearer predicts the club will only claim a further three points in the final three games

Over the past weekend, West Ham United’s struggle to survive in the Premier League took a major hit as they lost 3-0 to Brentford. After Tottenham Hotspur defeated Aston Villa on Sunday night, the Hammers fell back into the bottom three.

Despite the evident difficulty of West Ham’s next match against Arsenal at the London Stadium, the current predicament requires the Irons to secure a result if they are to give themselves a fighting chance to preserve their top-flight status.

With Nottingham Forest all but out of the relegation fight, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side are aware that they will need to improve Spurs’ performance over the next three weeks. Prominent football pundits believe the relegation picture has been turned on its head following the recent matchweek.

Micah Richards and Alan Shearer’s thoughts on West Ham’s survival chances

After the aforementioned Tottenham victory, West Ham are now favourites to be relegated, according to the renowned Opta supercomputer.

Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have been discussing the Hammer’s current situation on The Rest Is Football podcast following the Premier League’s results over the weekend.

“It’s a tough weekend for West Ham after being beaten quite convincingly, and then having to sit through that Tottenham game and watch how good Tottenham were,” Shearer said.

“I think with West Ham, with their games coming up, the next two are Arsenal at home and Newcastle [United] away and then finish with Leeds [United] at home; I think there’s probably three points there for West Ham out of the next three games.

“It’s been a terrible weekend for the Irons,” ended Shearer. On that statement, Richards added: “It’s mad, isn’t it? “West Ham picked up their form, hadn’t they? And then you get a bad result.”
