- West Ham beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 on Friday night
- The three points take the Hammers out of the Premier League bottom three
- Nuno Espirito Santo highlighted the fans as the biggest boost for the team
West Ham United routed Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 in a huge night for the Hammers. The three points takes Nuno Espirito Santo’s men out side of the Premier League relegation zone going into the rest of the weekend’s fixtures.
A double from Konstantinos Mavropanos and Valentin Castellanos secured the win for West Ham, in a performance where they really came to life in the second-half. The emphasis was simply about winning, and that’s exactly what the Irons did.
Speaking after the game, Nuno was full of praise for not only his players and staff, but the fans as well.
“The guys did a good job. Even though the game didn’t start well in the first half, we lost possession of the ball, we were not really compact and allowed lines.
“I think the [first] goal comes in the right moment. The boys settled down, composure on the second half, the way we play moving forward, do our work, off the ball, was very, very good.
“I think all of us deserve a night like this, especially our fans. Even in the first half, the support that they give to us. London Stadium is going to be key for us, so we cannot thank them enough.”
A full team performance for West Ham
Whilst the first-half was a slow burn for West Ham, the team truly came to life in the second, putting Wolves to the sword. Nuno acknowledged this whilst praising the character of his players.
“We have to realise how hard Wolves made it in the first half. That’s why I focused on the first goal, as the goal comes in the right moment.
“In the second half, we played against a good team, but we began creating chances. Even when the second half starts, we have a good situation with Summerville and Jarrod hitting the post again, which will change, as that’s a fine margin and it will go inside.
“So, we are really positive the way we did it in the second half. Trying to create these standards will be very important for us.”
Mavropanos is on quite the scoring run for a central defender but the Hammers boss isn’t surprised in the slightest.
“Dinos is scoring. Every time he goes forward, he creates danger. I think our consistency on delivering on the set pieces is improving. It’s a huge moment in the game. At the same time, I think we were strong, the way we defended.
“But we are delighted with Dinos, I hope it continues.”
Fans continue to play a key role in the run in for Hammers
Whilst Nuno was full of admiration for his staff and players, it was the fans who the Irons boss was most pleased for, stating just how important they will be for the remainder of the season.
“The noise was why I keep saying London Stadium was huge and our fans deserve a moment like this.
“Sunday was good and it ended up [in defeat], but today everything was positive. We killed the game in a couple of minutes. They deserve it.
“They deserve it and I just ask them for the support because everything changes on the energy of the boys when this noise comes from the stands.”
