West Ham United will need to keep an eye on their disciplinary situation as Nuno Espírito Santo’s side prepare for a busy October Championship schedule.
Taty Castellanos is currently the Hammer closest to an automatic yellow-card suspension after collecting three bookings through the opening eight league matches.
Under EFL disciplinary rules, a player who reaches five yellow cards during his club’s first 19 league fixtures receives a one-match suspension.
That leaves Castellanos only two cautions away from a ban.
West Ham Yellow Card Leaders
According to the latest West Ham Championship disciplinary statistics, the club’s leading yellow-card totals are:
| Player | Championship yellow cards |
|---|---|
| Taty Castellanos | 3 |
| Dinos Mavropanos | 2 |
| Max Kilman | 2 |
| Ollie Scarles | 2 |
| Mohamadou Kanté | 1 |
| Divine Mukasa | 1 |
| Jarrod Bowen | 1 |
| Joël Veltman | 1 |
| Mads Hermansen | 1 |
| Malick Diouf | 1 |
| Morato | 1 |
| Pablo | 1 |
Castellanos is therefore currently the only West Ham player more than halfway towards the first automatic suspension threshold.
Mavropanos, Kilman and Scarles would each require another three bookings before reaching five.
How Do Championship Yellow Card Suspensions Work?
The FA’s 2026/27 player disciplinary guidance sets out the automatic suspension system used in the EFL.
A player collecting five cautions during his club’s first 19 Championship matches serves a one-match league suspension.
The next major threshold is ten bookings before the completion of the club’s 37th league fixture, which results in a two-match ban.
Yellow-card accumulation is competition-specific, meaning Championship cautions are treated separately from domestic cup bookings.
That makes Castellanos’ next 11 league appearances particularly relevant.
Castellanos Important to West Ham Attack
West Ham will want to avoid losing Castellanos during a demanding period of the promotion race.
The striker has established himself as one of Nuno’s regular attacking options and remains a central figure heading into the return from the international break.
West Ham face QPR, Lincoln City, Swansea City, Southampton and West Brom before the end of October.
The complete run is available in our West Ham next five fixtures guide.
Picking up two bookings during that sequence would put Castellanos on five and trigger an automatic one-match suspension, provided the threshold is reached before West Ham complete their 19th league fixture.
Kanté Already Suspended Against QPR
West Ham already have one confirmed disciplinary absence for their first match after the international break.
Mohamadou Kanté will miss the QPR fixture following his red card during the 2-2 draw against Millwall.
Our Mohamadou Kanté suspension guide explains why the midfielder is unavailable and when he can return.
Kanté’s red-card suspension is separate from the yellow-card accumulation system.
West Ham Availability Becoming Important
The Hammers entered the international break second in the Championship, with little separating the leading sides.
Our West Ham Championship table guide tracks the current promotion picture.
With the fixture list becoming increasingly congested, keeping key players available could become more important as the season develops.
For now, Castellanos is the West Ham player closest to the first yellow-card suspension threshold, sitting on three bookings with 11 league matches remaining before the 19-game cut-off.
