West Ham Women face final test after major summer rebuild

West Ham United Women have one final opportunity to put their extensive summer rebuild through a competitive test before the 2026/27 Women’s Super League season begins.

Rita Guarino’s side travel to face Aston Villa at Keys Park on Sunday 30 August, with kick-off scheduled for 2pm.

West Ham’s official fixture information confirms it will be their final listed pre-season match before opening the WSL campaign away to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 6 September.

West Ham Women need signs of a settled team

Pre-season has been about far more than results for Guarino.

West Ham have significantly reshaped the squad following last season’s tenth-place finish, adding experience and depth across almost every position.

ReadWestHam has already examined how nine summer signings have transformed Guarino’s squad.

Katie Zelem, Laia Codina, Constance Picaud, Nadine Riesen, Sienna Wareing, Niamh Peacock, Ebony Salmon, Kelly Gago and Estelle Cascarino have all arrived permanently.

Codina brings Champions League and World Cup-winning experience, while Riesen has further increased Guarino’s defensive options. West Ham’s official profile of Riesen outlines the experience she adds to the squad.

The challenge now is turning those individual additions into a settled team.

Villa should provide a useful indication of how close West Ham are to doing that.

New-look attack has chance to build chemistry

Competition in attack has increased considerably.

Gago arrived after scoring ten times in 30 appearances for Everton, while Salmon gives Guarino another experienced WSL forward capable of playing centrally or from wider positions.

Salmon also has an added incentive this weekend.

The 25-year-old joined West Ham after leaving Aston Villa this summer, meaning Sunday provides an immediate reunion with her former club. ReadWestHam previously covered Salmon’s quick return to face Villa.

Viviane Asseyi remains another major part of Guarino’s plans after committing her future to West Ham until 2028.

Finding the most effective combination from those attacking options may be one of the biggest decisions before Tottenham.

Aston Villa provide valuable final examination

West Ham have continued preparing at Chadwell Heath this week, with the club looking ahead to the Villa fixture during their latest training work.

The club’s latest training gallery shows Guarino’s squad continuing preparations before Sunday’s final friendly.

Guarino does not need her team to look like the finished product against Villa.

She will, however, want evidence that the large amount of summer change is beginning to translate into cohesion.

The WSL opener arrives only seven days later.

That makes Villa more than another fitness exercise. It is West Ham’s final opportunity to refine partnerships, assess the balance of the rebuilt squad and establish which players are closest to starting against Tottenham.

After one of the busiest summers West Ham Women have experienced, attention is about to turn from recruitment to results.
