World Cup winner makes bold West Ham claim after summer overhaul

Laia Codina believes West Ham United Women are already improving following their major summer rebuild, with the World Cup winner insisting “better things are coming” under Rita Guarino.

West Ham concluded their pre-season camp in Wales with a 0-0 friendly draw against Bristol City on Tuesday, giving Guarino another opportunity to integrate a squad transformed by a busy transfer window.

Codina has been one of the headline additions after joining from Arsenal earlier this summer. ReadWestHam previously analysed how the Spain international fits into Guarino’s nine-signing overhaul, with significant changes made across defence, midfield and attack.

The early signs have left Codina encouraged.

Laia Codina sees West Ham improvement already

Speaking in a fresh interview with West Ham’s official website, Codina said the new-look group is improving “day by day” after spending several days together in Wales.

The defender added that the squad will continue working because “better things are coming”, offering an optimistic assessment of West Ham’s progress ahead of the new Women’s Super League campaign.

That message was reinforced by Guarino.

The West Ham head coach described the Wales camp as a productive period for helping the squad spend time together and build relationships away from their usual training environment. Her comments come after a summer in which several senior internationals have arrived in east London.

Codina brings particularly significant pedigree.

The 26-year-old arrived from Arsenal on a three-year contract after winning the 2023 World Cup with Spain and collecting major honours during spells with Barcelona and the Gunners. ReadWestHam covered her arrival in June.

West Ham have already made their ambitions clear in the transfer market. The challenge now is turning that extensive recruitment into a more competitive WSL side.

A goalless pre-season friendly will not provide definitive answers, but Codina believes the pieces are starting to come together.

Her message after the Wales camp was clear: West Ham are not the finished product yet.

They expect considerably more to come.
