West Ham United will reportedly face Colchester United in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Rush Green on Tuesday as preparations for the new Championship season continue.
ExWHUEmployee revealed the fixture on The West Ham Way Patreon and said the match could offer an early indication of Nuno Espírito Santo’s plans. The head coach now has a chance to assess returning loanees, senior players facing uncertain futures and academy prospects pushing for involvement.
West Ham officially returned to Rush Green last week and have focused on rebuilding fitness after relegation. The club have yet to confirm Tuesday’s private game publicly, although their official academy schedule also includes a separate pre-season fixture against Colchester on Saturday, 18 July.
Friendly can shape Nuno’s early squad decisions
The result will carry little importance, but the selection could reveal which players currently sit closest to Nuno’s first-team plans. Several members of the squad still face uncertain futures, while West Ham continue searching for new midfield, defensive and attacking options.
ReadWestHam recently covered how the return to Rush Green started Nuno’s first major pre-season assessment period. Tuesday’s game should allow him to move beyond training drills and study how players respond within his preferred structure.
ExWHUEmployee also reports that West Ham’s recruitment staff are holding meetings, with movement on several targets expected in the coming days. The club have money available following the £85m sale of Mateus Fernandes, but Nuno still needs completed signings rather than an expanding list of possibilities.
A private friendly gives the manager a useful early checkpoint. It should help West Ham decide which current players can contribute to the promotion campaign and where the squad still requires urgent work.
