West Ham youngster forced back from loan after injury blow

West Ham United goalkeeper Mason Terry has returned to the club after Port Vale terminated his season-long loan following an injury suffered in training.

The 21-year-old had joined Vale earlier this summer in what represented a step up in his senior development, but the League One club confirmed on Deadline Day that the agreement has now been cut short.

Port Vale said Terry will complete his rehabilitation back with West Ham.

Terry had been due to spend the entire 2026/27 campaign at Vale Park.

However, Port Vale confirmed:

“The goalkeeper picked up an injury in training and will complete rehab with his parent club.”

Reporting around the announcement identifies the problem as a hand injury, an especially significant setback for a goalkeeper.

The immediate priority will now be Terry’s recovery rather than arranging another loan.

It is a frustrating interruption for a player who has gradually been building experience away from east London.

Terry has been part of West Ham’s academy system since the age of nine and has yet to make his competitive senior debut for the Hammers.

His development can be followed alongside the club’s other emerging players through our West Ham Academy hub, which tracks U21s, U18s, loans and players pushing towards Nuno Espírito Santo’s first team.

Terry had been building senior experience away from West Ham

The goalkeeper spent much of last season with Braintree Town in the National League.

He made 37 appearances, keeping nine clean sheets, before securing the Port Vale move this summer.

That loan represented his biggest opportunity yet to establish himself at EFL level.

Instead, Terry now returns to Rush Green with his season temporarily on hold.

The setback also underlines why West Ham’s loan programme matters.

Kaelan Casey joined Stevenage on loan this week, while several other Academy players are attempting to secure meaningful senior minutes as part of their pathway towards first-team football.

Our permanently updated West Ham Academy guide should increasingly become the central place to track those moves and development stories throughout the season.

For Terry, the focus is simpler.

Get fit, complete his rehabilitation and then reassess the next stage of his development.
