West Ham talent Mayers handed England chance as Golambeckis misses out in France win

West Ham defender Ezra Mayers earned minutes for England U20s as Darren Moore’s side beat France 2-1 on Tuesday, while club teammate Airidas Golambeckis remained on the bench.

Mayers replaced Christopher Rigg in the 79th minute with England protecting a one-goal advantage at the Estadi Olímpic Camilo Cano in Spain.

England’s official match report confirms his involvement and lists Golambeckis among the unused substitutes.

Ezra Mayers gets England U20 opportunity

The appearance gives Mayers competitive minutes during West Ham’s extended break from Championship action.

England established their advantage early. Shumaira Mheuka opened the scoring after nine minutes before captain Mikey Moore doubled the lead five minutes later.

Prosper Peter pulled one back for France in the 69th minute, setting up a tighter finish before Mayers entered the contest.

The result follows England’s 3-1 victory over Italy, when Golambeckis started alongside Divine Mukasa, as covered in our previous West Ham international update.

Germany offers another selection opportunity

England continue their programme against Germany on Saturday 3 October, giving both West Ham defenders another opportunity to feature.

Mukasa now has a different assignment after his promotion to Lee Carsley’s U21 squad.

For Mayers and Golambeckis, the immediate focus remains earning further involvement with the U20s before returning to West Ham.

Tuesday brought contrasting afternoons for the pair, but another fixture remains for Moore to assess his options.
