West Ham United have sprung a Deadline Day surprise by reaching a verbal agreement with Leicester City to sign Belgium international Wout Faes.
Sacha Tavolieri reports that an agreement was struck between the clubs overnight, with the 28-year-old now expected to join the Hammers and sign a three-year contract.
The move represents a major breakthrough for Nuno Espírito Santo as West Ham desperately attempt to reinforce their defence before tonight’s 11pm deadline.
West Ham agree shock Wout Faes move
Faes returned to Leicester this summer after spending the second half of last season on loan at Monaco.
The Belgian became a regular in France, making 16 appearances, but Monaco ultimately decided against triggering their €7.5million purchase option.
West Ham have been assessing several centre-backs after Jean-Clair Todibo’s departure, including Nottingham Forest defender Morato.
Their pursuit of Ladislav Krejci also suffered a major setback after the Wolves defender was reported to be unwilling to play in the Championship.
Faes has now suddenly moved ahead of those options.
No official announcement has been made yet, but with a verbal club agreement and three-year contract expected, West Ham appear to have pulled off one of their most unexpected moves of the window.
