West Ham face renewed uncertainty over Edson Alvarez after a club source reportedly dismissed suggestions the midfielder will stay for the Championship campaign.
The fresh Edson Alvarez transfer update comes despite Nuno Espírito Santo wanting the Mexico international to remain part of his plans.
Álvarez was handed the No.4 shirt when West Ham confirmed their squad numbers this week, prompting suggestions his future in east London may have changed.
However, Claret & Hugh reported on Friday morning that a well-placed club source responded with a firm “No” when asked whether the 28-year-old would be staying.
A second source also stressed that being allocated a squad number does not guarantee Álvarez will remain beyond the transfer window.
Edson Alvarez transfer still points towards West Ham exit
Nuno would reportedly prefer to keep Álvarez and views his ability to operate in midfield and central defence as valuable for a promotion campaign.
The player’s own position could prove more important.
Álvarez is said to want top-flight football, while Ajax and Real Sociedad are among the clubs to have shown interest. West Ham’s valuation and the midfielder’s wages have so far complicated attempts to find an agreement.
His departure would create another decision for the Hammers during an already significant rebuild.
ReadWestHam reported on Thursday that West Ham are working on four potential additions worth around £75million, with Nuno still looking to strengthen several areas before the Championship season begins.
Keeping Álvarez would give West Ham an experienced international capable of anchoring the midfield. Losing him would increase the pressure to ensure the rebuild leaves enough quality behind for a 46-game promotion challenge.
The latest Edson Alvarez transfer update does not confirm he will leave.
It does, however, suggest his squad number should not be interpreted as evidence that his West Ham future has been settled.
