Manchester United’s interest in Lewis Hall should provide West Ham with another reminder of the value of keeping hold of promising young defenders.
The Newcastle United left-back has developed into a major Premier League asset, while the Hammers are currently facing their own decision over El Hadji Malick Diouf.
Hall joined Newcastle from Chelsea in 2023 on an initial loan which became a permanent £28million transfer, with a further £7m potentially due in add-ons.
The England international has since established himself at St James’ Park and is now attracting attention from Old Trafford.
Lewis Hall interest should give West Ham pause
Luke Shaw is entering the final year of his United contract, while Patrick Dorgu is expected to feature further forward. That has left Hall among the players being considered.
There is a clear lesson for West Ham when assessing the future of Diouf.
The Senegal international is only 21 and impressed during his first season in England despite the Hammers’ relegation. ReadWestHam reported that Brentford have already submitted an offer for Diouf, with other clubs also interested.
West Ham have since rejected approaches and are under little financial pressure to sell after raising significant funds through other departures.
Hall’s development shows how quickly the value of a talented young full-back can rise once given consistent Premier League football.
Diouf still has areas to improve, particularly defensively, but a season playing regularly under Nuno Espírito Santo could accelerate that development.
West Ham therefore need a compelling reason to change their stance. Selling another young asset too early could look particularly costly if Diouf follows a similar upward trajectory.
