Bayer Leverkusen Target West Ham Defender Konstantinos Mavropanos

Bayer Leverkusen are continuing to circle Konstantinos Mavropanos, with a fresh claim placing the West Ham United defender at the top of the Bundesliga side’s defensive shortlist.

Transfer reporter Ekrem Konur has stated that Leverkusen have made Mavropanos their leading centre-back target. The claim follows earlier German reporting that Bayer were considering the Greece international as they look to strengthen the right side of their defence.

Bulinews reported last month, citing Bild, that Leverkusen were looking at Mavropanos as a possible summer signing. The logic is clear enough. He knows the Bundesliga from his time at Stuttgart and has the profile to defend centrally or cover the right side of a back line.

For West Ham, the timing is awkward. Nuno Espirito Santo needs Championship-ready leaders, not another hole in the spine of a squad already bruised by relegation.

Nuno Faces Another Defensive Retention Test

Mavropanos is not an expendable squad player. ReadWestHam has already covered how his West Ham redemption ended with the Hammer of the Year award, a recognition built on committed performances during a failing season.

That changes the calculation. Losing Mavropanos would carry a sporting cost beyond one transfer fee, especially when West Ham are trying to convince supporters that the rebuild is about immediate promotion rather than managed decline.

Claret & Hugh also framed the latest Leverkusen link as a problem for Nuno, noting Mavropanos’ Bundesliga pedigree and West Ham’s need to keep key players together. That is the central issue.

Axel Disasi has already returned to Chelsea after his loan, while Jean-Clair Todibo’s future has remained uncertain. West Ham cannot allow the centre-back department to drift into another emergency rebuild.

If Leverkusen formalise their interest, Nils Koppen faces a brutal early judgement. Either West Ham keep their best defender and build around him, or they demand a fee strong enough to sign a replacement with promotion-level authority.

Anything in between would weaken Nuno before the season has even started.
