  • The midfielder helped his nation, Czechia, to qualify

West Ham United may be looking at their own problems as they prepare for life in the Championship. Despite this, midfielder Tomas Soucek is determined to enjoy his time at the World Cup this summer, having qualified with his nation, Czechia.

The 31-year-old has told the club’s official website he will not live down the once in a lifetime experience.

“It was a dream and we know how long it has been since we were there. It was 20 years and we all wanted to do it so in March everything went in our hands because we had two shootouts and we changed the history again.

“We are all looking forward for the World Cup because the whole country has waited for so very long. Now we are there, we just don’t want to only enjoy that but we want to be successful there as well.

“The first goal that we did was to qualify and it was really nice to be part of that.”

West Ham’s Tomas Soucek determined to take his chances

Soucek is determined to take his chances at the tournament, and leave everything on the pitch as he does for West Ham.

“The group is from all over the world because it’s one Asian team, one African team, one North American team and one European team, so it’s great to have this.

“In this World Cup lots of teams from third position in their group go through so for me the only goal is to go through. We have to go step by step but the dream has to be to go as far as we can.

“I said to myself for me I would be happy if we play five games at the World Cup and then anything can happen if we reach the round of 16. Let’s aim for the five games and see what we can do.

“This will likely be my first and last World Cup, so it will never be disappointing and I want to enjoy it, so let’s go!”
