- Mateus Fernandes is expected to leave West Ham this summer
- This is regardless of if the Hammers stay up or not
- Arsenal have now joined the race for the 21-year-old
West Ham United know they will have to move players on no matter their league next season. The Hammers are currently in a serious relegation scrap, sitting two points adrift in the Premier League with just two games to go.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s team have a lot of prized assets and whilst Jarrod Bowen is getting his usual attention, he is not the West Ham player with the most suitors. Summer acquisition, Mateus Fernandes is.
The 21-year-old has performed superbly this season, being one of the Hammers shining lights in a very difficult season. The midfielder, who has now been given a price tag in excess of £80 million, is up for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Year award for his showings this campaign.
Whether or not the Irons can stay in the top flight will be found out in the next two weeks, but Fernandes is set to move to bigger things no matter where West Ham are playing next season.
Arsenal join race for West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes
According to multiple sources, Arsenal have joined the race for Fernandes, hoping they can recreate the success of when they took Declan Rice to the Emirates from the Hammers.
Mateus Fernandes’s 2025/26 West Ham United Statistics
| Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| 36 | 4 | 3 |
The 21-year-old has a number of suitors, including pretty much every Champions League qualifying side in the Premier League. At present, it appears that Paris-Saint Germain are leading the race, having already contacted Fernandes’s representation about a move.
Now, with Arsenal joining the race, the Portugal international may see his mind changed. Mikel Arteta is planning on revamping his midfield this summer, with or without a Premier League title this season.
Last summer, the Gunners purchased Martin Zubimendi but appear to open to selling the Spaniard after just one season. That would leave the door open for Fernandes to come in and partner Rice from the off at the Emirates, something PSG will not be able to guarantee.
Fernandes has a big summer ahead, but the current Hammer may not be going that far away.
