West Ham ready to cut and run after transfer shocker

Niclas Füllkrug West Ham

West Ham United are said to be prepared to accept a minimal transfer fee to make Niclas Füllkrug’s loan move to Werder Bremen permanent.

According to a report from The West Ham Way, club chiefs are ready to pull the plug on a very expensive mistake, with the 33-year-old Germany international having no realistic future under Nuno Espírito Santo.

Writing on Patreon for WHW, ExWHUEmployee stated:

“Füllkrug is impressing on his loan spell with Werder Bremen, which ultimately is good for West Ham.

“We already know they are keen to keep him and we understand that West Ham are happy to let him go for a minimal fee to get him off the books.

“The issue will be wages, so a compromise from the player’s side will be needed should he want the move to be permanent.”

Back in form in the Bundesliga

Niclas Füllkrug has enjoyed a strong start to the current season back at his former club, on a season-long loan.

The existing arrangement has no purchase option and that could work in Werder’s favour.

Füllkrug has scored six goals in the Bundesliga so far, with all of those coming in the last five games.

His homecoming resurgence stands in sharp contrast to his time spent in East London.

Signed from Borussia Dortmund for around £27 million in August 2024 on a four-year contract, Füllkrug managed just three goals and two assists in 29 appearances for the Hammers.

Last season, it was clear the player was struggling to adapt to Premier League demands, leading to a subsequent loan to AC Milan in the second half of last season.

All about the money and compromise for Füllkrug

However, any permanent transfer to Werder Bremen will require agreement from West Ham, as well as a compromise from the striker.

It’s OK if the Hammers are willing to accept a nominal fee, but the Germans simply can’t match the striker’s salary at present.

There’s a deal to be done, but let’s see if there’s the will on all sides to make it happen.

From West Ham’s perspective, the massive transfer fee spent on Niclas Füllkrug has to be written off as a costly error, and the wages put to better use elsewhere.
