Former Tottenham Hotspur boss highlights why West Ham have the upper hand in survival fight

  • West Ham currently sit two points above the relegation zone
  • Tottenham Hotspur occupy the last drop zone place
  • The Hammers face Crystal Palace on Monday, whilst Spurs play Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday

West Ham United’s Premier League survival fight took a huge step forward as they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0. The comprehensive victory takes the Hammers out of the bottom three, where Nuno Espirito Santo’s team would remain after Tottenham Hotspur lost to Sunderland.

Whilst the likes of Nottingham Forest and Leeds United can be dragged into it, the leading two candidates for relegation appear to be West Ham and Spurs. With two points in it, the emphasis is now in the Hammers hands but with six games to go, anything could change.

Nuno’s men head to Crystal Palace on Monday night, hoping that the Eagles Thursday night trip to Florence leaves some tired legs. Spurs host Brighton & Hove Albion in a game that is far from simple, with the away side chasing down a European place this season.

Tim Sherwood picks out West Ham characters that could get them over the line

Former Spurs and Aston Villa boss, Tim Sherwood, believes that West Ham have the upper hand in the survival scrap. Speaking to Sky Sports News, the former manager highlighted the characters in the Hammers squad, stating it is something Spurs do not have, despite their quality.

“Yes, they’re (Spurs) not good enough (in terms of achieving the aims as to) why they were brought into the club because I mean, the objectives would have been to challenge for the Champions League. They’re nowhere near that. Let’s get that right. But they’re capable of staying in the league.

“But on the evidence of what we’ve seen, they’re not. Because there’s some ingredient missing, and that’s character – that’s what’s underneath the shirt. Forget about the pretty patterns, what they can do in training or whatever, the ability they have. It’s about the mentality and the heart. And at the moment, they’re void of that.

“You need characters in this situation. Look at West Ham, who are a team who are pulling some results together.

“Disasi, Mavropanos, like two rocks at the back there at the moment. They’re putting their head on everything, putting their bodies on the line, staying where they are, not trying to embroider and do whatever they want.

“They’ve got Soucek there who’s tackling everyone, you know, blocking things.”

matchday.
