  • Mateus Fernandes could leave West Ham in the summer
  • Manchester United and Manchester City are interested

West Ham United’s season has not gone to plan but it has not stopped a number of stars from emerging. As the Hammers push for survival this season, the vultures are circling with some players more than showing their worth in the Premier League.

One name that is on everyone’s lips, is Mateus Fernandes. The now-Portugal international joined West Ham in the summer from Southampton and has gone on to be one of the first names on the team sheet.

With the Hammers position in the top flight in jeopardy, clubs are already looking into making a move for the 21-year-old. Manchester United are a vested party, with the likes of Casemiro leaving Old Trafford this summer.

According to Football Insider, United‘s cross-city rivals, Manchester City have now joined the race. Pep Guardiola’s team are planning a summer rebuild whether or not they win more trophies, and Fernandes is one name they believe can be key to keeping the team winning.

The midfielder’s fellow countryman, Bernardo Silva is set to leave the Etihad at the end of the season, with Fernandes seen as a long-term replacement.

Ferndandes’s debut season at West Ham

Signed for big money in the summer, things did not begin on the front foot for Fernandes at West Ham. When Nuno Espirito Santo took the job to be in charge of the Irons, things began to change for the young midfielder.

Since Nuno took over, the 21-year-old has been the focal point of this team, connecting the defence with the attack and making things happen. Right now, Fernandes is one of, if not the most important player to the Hammers.

Fernandes’s form has earned him a call-up to the senior Portugal side. Something he has dreamed of. If he can help West Ham stay up, there could be a place for him at this summer’s World Cup.

The team are under no illusion that he will leave if they go down but should they stay up, there will be a hefty price tag on his head.
