  • West Ham lost 2-0 to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon
  • West Ham are now one point from safety
  • Nottingham Forest are now three points above West Ham

West Ham United lost 2-0 to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon as they failed to capitalise on a opportunity to book their ticked out of the bottom three. Almost everything went wrong for Nuno Espirito Santo’s team as they looked like the West Ham of 2025 in a poor showing at Villa Park.

John McGinn and Ollie Watkins netted the goals for the host’s, as the Hammers lost Jean-Clair Todibo in the warm-ups, throwing off any gameplan whatsoever. The loss is made ever-more difficult with the knowledge that three points would have taken the Hammers out of the relegation zone, regardless of results around them.

That is because, then 17th placed Nottingham Forest were travelling to take on then 16th placed, Tottenham Hotspur. It was Forest who would come out victorious, winning 3-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, seeing them leapfrog their opponents.

The result’s leave West Ham one point from safety, now chasing Spurs, rather than Forest in the quest for survival.

16th, 15th, 14th

Nottingham Forest took one step closer to their goal, defeating Spurs and moving into 16th, three points above the drop zone.

Leeds United are getting very close to dropping back into the relegation scrap, as they could only manage a 0-0 draw with Brentford. Daniel Farke’s team have now not scored a goal in their last three Premier League games and are without a league in in five games. The West Yorkshire side are now on 33 points, just four above West Ham.

On 39 points and most likely safe from relegation, sit’s Crystal Palace. The Eagles did not play this weekend having been due to face Manchester City, who were instead playing for the Carabao Cup against Arsenal.

Palace are likely already safe, and now have a game in hand on the team’s below them.

The bottom two

Below West Ham, Burnley would fall to defeat once again. The Clarets did take the lead against Fulham through Zian Flemming, but were quickly pegged back, going on to lose 3-1 to their London-based opposition.

That loss leaves Scott Parker’s men ten points from safety, and showing little signs of improvement as the final run in looms.

At the bottom of the Premier League, Wolverhampton Wanderers did not play this weekend, but did play their 31st game on Monday night last week. That game ended in a 2-2 draw with Brentford as they continue to improve on the pitch.

The result did little for their league standing, with Wolves still 13 points from safety.
