West Ham United have reportedly made the first move to test Sevilla’s position on Switzerland winger Ruben Vargas.
Sport Witness reports, citing Spanish outlet Orgullo Biri, that West Ham have made contact to understand the conditions of a possible summer deal.
The report says Sevilla would consider offers between €15m and €20m. Vargas’ World Cup form has increased interest, with Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Trabzonspor also named as possible suitors.
Sevilla confirmed in January 2025 that Vargas had signed from Augsburg on a deal until 2029. The 27-year-old can play off either flank and also operates as an attacking midfielder.
Nuno Faces A Difficult Sales Pitch
The fee is only one part of the challenge for West Ham. Sport Witness says Vargas wants a strong salary and a clear sporting project. Champions League football is also high on his list if he leaves Sevilla.
That makes West Ham’s position difficult. Nuno Espirito Santo and Nils Koppen can sell a serious rebuild, but the club are still preparing for a Championship season.
The upside is clear. Vargas brings senior international experience, direct running and wide flexibility. AS reported that Switzerland boss Murat Yakin praised his pace, dynamism and defensive work during the World Cup.
He would also fit a squad need if Crysencio Summerville leaves. Read West Ham has already covered how Summerville’s future could shape the club’s wide-player planning after relegation.
West Ham now need to decide how far to push. Vargas has the profile to improve Nuno’s attack, but clubs with stronger European platforms may have an easier route to the player.
