Manchester United monitor West Ham pair ahead of uncertain summer

West Ham United are in a uncertain position as things stand. In the midst of a relegation battle, with financial issues looming, a summer of change seems inevitable at the end of the season, whether or not they stay up in the Premier League.

There’s no hiding that some players will move on after June, regardless of the club’s league position. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are still well within a shot of remaining in the top flight, but whether the West Ham likes it or not, it is a shop window for some players.

Manchester United have enjoyed a miraculous turnaround at the top of the division, in thanks to interim boss Michael Carrick. The Red Devils look set to return to Europe ahead of next season, and are already looking into the market. According to TeamTalk, United are keeping their eyes on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Jarrod Bowen.

The club will need to sell in the summer, even if they stay up, with Bowen and Fernandes seen as key asset’s to West Ham and highly sellable. The Hammers captain is said to be available for around £50m, but would only be open to moving on should the team drop into the Championship. Fernandes is available for around the same price, but that could easily rise if continues to impress this season.

Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the pair, having enquired about Bowen in the summer. A move would only happen should Spurs stay up and West Ham don’t, given that both team’s are in the same relegation fight.

Bowen and Fernandes’s importance to West Ham

Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton in the summer, and has turned into one of the Hammer’s better performers this campaign. The 21-year-old struggled to find where he belonged under former boss Graham Potter. Under Nuno, the Portuguese midfielder has begun to flourish in a new, deeper role, controlling the tempo in the middle for the Irons.

Club captain Bowen’s importance to West Ham over the years cannot be understated. The winger has been integral to the club over the last six years, but has struggled to reach his usual level this season. The 29-year-old has been a regular in the England set up over the last couple of years, and a campaign in the Championship would likely end his international career.

There’s no hiding that Bowen loves West Ham, but his ambitions in the international game combined with the club’s financial issues, could see him move on in the summer. No doubt the player will do all he can to keep the club in the Premier League, regardless of what happens after May.

Next up for the Hammers

With relegation still a real possibility, West Ham remain two points from safety following their 5-2 defeat at Anfield to Liverpool.

Next up is a midweek derby at fellow London side, Fulham. The Cottagers beat Tottenham Hotspur in their last game, stopping Spurs from gaining any ground in the relegation fight.

After that it’s a break from the Hammers Premier League headache, as they head to Brentford for an FA Cup tie. Following that, Nuno’s team will return to league action, hosting title-chasing Manchester City.
