West Ham midfielder Diego Poyet has decided to play for Uruguay instead of England on the international stage, according to the Mirror.
The 19-year-old has been granted permission by West Ham to feature for his country’s Under-20s team in two friendlies against Uzbekistan and Portugal at the end of March.
The former Charlton youth product had previously represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 levels, but withdrew from the Under-20s squad for a match with Romania in September last year.
“Diego hasn’t decided whether he wants to play for Uruguay or not so, rather than wait for him to make his mind up, we have decided to leave him to it.” – England Under-20s Head Coach Aidy Boothroyd
Poyet will be eligible for the Under-20s World Cup in New Zealand later this year, following in his father, Gus’ footsteps, who made 23 appearances for Uruguay between 1993 and 2000.
