Stewart Downing has explained how Mark Noble and Kevin Nolan shared leadership duties at West Ham, comparing their partnership with Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher at Liverpool.
Nolan held the captaincy when Downing arrived, but the former England winger says Noble carried considerable influence behind the scenes.
Speaking to Pickd Sports, in comments reported by Hammers News, Downing said: “Mark Noble sort of ran the club, the dressing room if you like.”
Downing explains Noble and Nolan partnership
Downing described two senior players whose responsibilities complemented each other. Nolan had the armband and a strong relationship with Sam Allardyce, while Noble understood the club through his years there.
His comparison with Liverpool concerned how leadership worked across the dressing room. Gerrard was captain, but Carragher remained an influential voice alongside him.
That distinction matters. Downing was discussing the way the pairs worked together, rather than ranking Noble alongside Gerrard as a player.
For West Ham supporters, it offers an insight into how authority extended beyond the designated captain.
Our view: the useful lesson is shared responsibility. A captain can set standards, but teammates must reinforce them in training and during matches.
We have examined a different aspect of that burden in our analysis of West Ham’s reliance on Jarrod Bowen, looking at how Nuno can spread responsibility through his squad.
