Teddy Sheringham does not expect West Ham to run away with the Championship, warning that their recent improvement offers no protection against another difficult spell.
The former Hammers striker believes consistency will decide the promotion race, with Nuno Espírito Santo’s side needing to maintain their standards when league football resumes.
“Are West Ham going to run away with the Championship now? I don’t think so,” Sheringham told Hajper, in comments published by The Football League Paper on Friday.
He argued that a strong month can transform a club’s position, but rivals can make equally rapid progress. Teams further down the table also remain capable of taking points from promotion contenders.
Sheringham identifies QPR test for West Ham
Sheringham expects West Ham to have to work hard for a result against QPR, although he believes victory could help them build momentum again.
The Hammers host Rangers at London Stadium on Friday 9 October, kicking off at 8pm BST.
Nuno already has a midfield change to consider, with Mohamadou Kanté suspended following his dismissal at Millwall.
Tomáš Souček’s scoring return in Friday’s friendly win over Wycombe offers encouragement, although his competitive readiness still needs assessing.
Sheringham’s verdict leaves room for optimism about West Ham’s prospects. His concern is the assumption that an improved run makes the remaining season straightforward.
The QPR game provides the next opportunity to show that progress can survive the interruption of the international break.
