West Ham’s Fullkrug admits England may not suit him

West Ham striker Niclas Füllkrug has suggested English football may not suit him after reflecting on the injuries that disrupted his time in east London.

The 33-year-old is rebuilding his form on loan at Werder Bremen following a difficult spell with the Hammers.

In comments attributed to Sport Bild and reported by BuliNews this week, Füllkrug said: “England probably isn’t made for me as a type of player or as an athlete either.”

He acknowledged that he could not fully explain why his West Ham spell had gone so badly. The forward also highlighted how unusual repeated muscle injuries had been within his wider injury history.

Niclas Fullkrug finds form away from West Ham

Füllkrug joined West Ham from Borussia Dortmund in 2024 before spending the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan.

His subsequent return to Bremen has brought a more productive start. As our earlier report on Füllkrug’s scoring run detailed, he scored four goals in his opening five competitive appearances.

That total comprised three Bundesliga goals and one in the DFB-Pokal.

Füllkrug remains contracted to West Ham until summer 2028, according to BuliNews. His current spell in Germany is a loan.

For the Hammers, sustained fitness and regular goals would provide a stronger basis for assessing his future. Five appearances offer encouragement, but the next test is maintaining that availability across a full season.
