West Ham’s Hermansen makes six saves as Portugal punish Denmark

West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen made six saves on his return to Denmark’s starting XI, but Portugal struck four times to win at Parken on Thursday night.

Brian Riemer recalled Hermansen after the Hammers goalkeeper remained on the bench against Norway and Wales, with Filip Jørgensen starting both matches.

His first appearance of this Nations League campaign brought a demanding evening against a Portugal side who repeatedly opened up the Danish defence.

João Cancelo put the visitors ahead before Mikkel Damsgaard equalised. Gonçalo Ramos quickly restored Portugal’s advantage, leaving Denmark trailing 2-1 at half-time.

Rasmus Højlund levelled again after the restart, but Vitinha’s 67th-minute header and a late João Félix goal settled the contest.

Sofascore’s match data records six saves for Hermansen as Portugal finished with 10 attempts on target.

The West Ham keeper denied Rafael Leão, Ramos and Bruno Fernandes during a busy performance. However, his distribution also created trouble.

As beIN Sports’ report explains, Hermansen’s save from Ramos before the break followed his own loss of possession.

Regaining his place gave him valuable international minutes, although conceding four made this a difficult return.

Denmark travel to Wales on Sunday 4 October, giving Riemer another selection decision before the international window closes.

West Ham then resume their Championship campaign against QPR at London Stadium on Friday 9 October, with kick-off at 8pm BST.
