West Ham United have received an encouraging Dinos Mavropanos injury update after the defender required treatment while representing Greece.
Mavropanos went down during the second half of Greece’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Serbia on Thursday and needed treatment before returning to the pitch.
Crucially for West Ham, the centre-back was able to continue for more than 20 minutes and was not replaced until the 91st minute.
There has been no official confirmation that Mavropanos has suffered a significant injury, and he remains with Greece ahead of their Nations League meeting with Germany on Sunday night.
That provides some encouragement for Nuno Espírito Santo before West Ham return to Championship action against Queens Park Rangers.
What happened to Dinos Mavropanos against Serbia?
Mavropanos started at centre-back as Greece opened their Nations League campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory in Belgrade.
Hammers News reported that play was stopped in the 67th minute after the defender went down and received treatment.
He was able to return and continued until stoppage time.
Match records show Mavropanos was eventually replaced by Giannis Michailidis in the 91st minute, shortly before Greece scored their winner.
Our report from Greece’s 2-1 victory over Serbia details how Mavropanos helped his country begin the international window with three points.
His ability to continue for such a significant period after receiving treatment is encouraging, although West Ham supporters will want to see how he comes through the remainder of Greece’s schedule before assuming the issue is completely resolved.
Mavropanos remains important to West Ham
The concern matters because Mavropanos has become one of Nuno’s most influential players during the opening weeks of the Championship season.
FotMob’s current Championship data records the Greece international with seven starts and 610 league minutes.
He has already scored four Championship goals, including West Ham’s late equaliser in the 2-2 draw against Millwall.
Mavropanos has also won 64.3 per cent of his aerial duels.
His attacking impact has been particularly striking for a centre-back, with our analysis of Mavropanos’ remarkable West Ham scoring run examining why he has become such a threat from set pieces.
That combination of defensive importance and goal threat makes his fitness particularly significant.
Will Mavropanos be fit for West Ham vs QPR?
It is still too early to state definitively that Mavropanos has been cleared for the QPR game.
Greece are due to face Germany on Sunday before hosting the Netherlands on Thursday 1 October and Germany again on Sunday 4 October.
The Greek Football Federation’s Nations League schedule confirms those remaining fixtures.
Mavropanos’ involvement against Germany will therefore provide another useful indication of how he has recovered from the knock suffered against Serbia.
West Ham do at least have time on their side.
Nuno’s team do not return to Championship action until QPR visit London Stadium on Friday 9 October, giving Mavropanos several days to return from international duty and prepare with the squad.
Supporters can follow every appearance and fitness development involving West Ham’s internationals through our international break tracker.
Full details for the first game back are also available in our West Ham vs QPR TV channel and live stream guide.
For now, Mavropanos playing on for more than 20 minutes after receiving treatment is a positive sign.
His status against Germany should provide the next meaningful fitness update.
