Edvin Austbø has admitted his delight after scoring his first West Ham United goal just days after completing a £10million move from Viking. The 21-year-old came off the bench to help seal Saturday’s 3-0 win over Derby County, then followed his goal by setting up Mohamadou Kanté for the third.
West Ham’s official channels have now published Austbø’s first post-match interview, with the Norwegian making his feelings clear after an immediate impact in claret and blue.
The club’s homepage leads with the message: “I’m super happy to score my first goal.”
That reaction is understandable.
Austbø only joined West Ham on 31 August, signing a four-year contract with the option of a further season after leaving boyhood club Viking.
Edvin Austbø makes immediate West Ham impact
Austbø was introduced after 77 minutes with West Ham still protecting a slender 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, the winger was in the right place to convert after Jarrod Bowen failed to make clean contact with Arne Engels‘ cross.
He then turned provider deep into stoppage time, finding Kanté before the midfielder drove home West Ham’s third.
The performance meant Austbø finished his first Championship appearance with one goal and one assist. West Ham’s official player profile now records both contributions against his name.
Sky Sports also confirmed that Austbø arrived from Viking for £10million before scoring his first West Ham goal against Derby.
The timing could hardly have been better.
Our earlier analysis of why Austbø has already given Nuno a major selection decision looked at whether the winger has done enough to force his way into the starting XI.
His latest reaction adds another layer to that story.
Austbø already looks ready to contribute
West Ham knew they were signing one of Norway’s most exciting young attacking players.
Austbø scored six goals and provided seven assists during Viking’s title-winning 2025 campaign, earning the Eliteserien Young Player of the Year award. He also scored in his final appearance for the club as Viking secured Champions League qualification.
There was always a question over how quickly he would adapt to English football.
His first appearance provided an encouraging answer.
West Ham travel to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night, and our predicted XI for the Championship clash already backs Austbø for his first start.
Whether Nuno goes that far remains to be seen.
What is already clear is that West Ham’s new £10m winger has wasted very little time announcing himself.
