Arne Engels is closing in on a £22million move to West Ham United, but the attraction goes beyond simply adding another body to Nuno Espírito Santo’s midfield. What Arne Engels brings to West Ham is youth, experience at a high level and a greater attacking contribution from central areas.
ReadWestHam reported earlier on Friday that a full £22m agreement has been reached with Celtic, with Florian Plettenberg stating that Engels is set to sign a contract until 2031.
At 22, the Belgium midfielder fits a recruitment strategy based around players capable of helping West Ham immediately while still carrying significant long-term value.
What Arne Engels brings to West Ham
Engels has already accumulated considerable senior experience despite his age.
Opta records 64 Scottish Premiership appearances for Celtic, producing 14 goals and nine assists across his two league campaigns in Glasgow. He also made 51 Bundesliga appearances for Augsburg before joining Celtic in 2024.
His 2025/26 league campaign provides a useful indication of the attacking threat West Ham are buying.
Engels scored five goals and supplied three assists in 30 Premiership appearances, while also contributing one goal and three assists across eight Europa League games. Those figures are particularly notable for a player operating primarily from central midfield.
Not every goal contribution will translate directly to the Championship, particularly as some of Engels’ Celtic goals came from the penalty spot, but his numbers demonstrate a willingness to take responsibility in attacking areas.
West Ham have lacked consistent output from midfield, and another player capable of arriving around the penalty area or creating chances gives Nuno greater flexibility.
Engels can give Nuno more midfield options
West Ham’s need for another central midfielder has become increasingly clear during the summer.
ReadWestHam identified Engels as one of three transfers Nuno still needed to complete on Thursday, particularly with Tomáš Souček unavailable at the start of the season and uncertainty surrounding other members of the midfield.
Engels gives Nuno an option capable of playing as a conventional central midfielder while offering more attacking ambition than a purely defensive number six.
His previous experience should also reduce some of the adaptation risk. Engels played 51 times in the Bundesliga for Augsburg before moving to Celtic and has since experienced European football alongside the demands of playing for a club expected to win almost every week.
That expectation will follow him to West Ham.
Nuno’s side are widely expected to challenge for immediate promotion, leaving little room for a lengthy settling-in period.
£22m fee reflects West Ham’s ambition
A £22m outlay is considerable for a Championship club, but Engels is not being recruited solely for one promotion campaign.
His proposed contract until 2031 gives West Ham the opportunity to develop a player who is already an established senior international-level midfielder while retaining his value should the club return to the Premier League. The latest ReadWestHam transfer update reports the financial agreement and long-term contract details.
Engels will still need to prove he can reproduce his Celtic performances in the Championship.
But his age, experience and ability to contribute goals and assists explain why West Ham have persisted with the deal throughout the summer.
For Nuno, he offers something particularly valuable before a 46-game promotion campaign: another midfielder capable of influencing matches at both ends of the pitch.
