West Ham United travel to Burnley on Sunday carrying an eight-match unbeaten run against the Clarets as Nuno Espírito Santo’s side begin their Championship promotion campaign at Turf Moor.
The Burnley vs West Ham head-to-head record has favoured the Hammers in recent years, with West Ham avoiding defeat in every meeting between the clubs since July 2020.
Sunday’s game will be a very different challenge, however, with both clubs starting life back in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League.
Burnley vs West Ham head-to-head favours Hammers
West Ham have gone eight consecutive games unbeaten against Burnley, a sequence which includes victories in both meetings last season.
Burnley have not beaten the Hammers since July 2020, giving Nuno’s side an encouraging recent record to take into the opening weekend. talkSPORT’s match preview highlights West Ham’s eight-game unbeaten sequence ahead of Sunday’s fixture.
Recent history will offer little protection once the game begins.
Burnley have a strong record of responding to relegation and will begin another promotion challenge on home soil. West Ham, meanwhile, return to the Championship for the first time in 14 years.
ReadWestHam reported on Friday that Burnley will be without three first-team players for the opener, with Jordan Beyer, Josh Cullen and Jaydon Banel all unavailable.
Nuno could also have another option available following West Ham’s move for Arne Engels. ReadWestHam reported that a full £22million agreement had been reached with Celtic, although the midfielder’s availability for Sunday depends on the remaining registration formalities.
West Ham officially confirm the Championship fixture kicks off at 4pm BST on Sunday 16 August. The club’s Burnley away information also confirms the match will take place at Turf Moor.
An eight-game unbeaten record gives West Ham confidence rather than guarantees.
For Nuno, extending that sequence with three points would provide an ideal start to a season in which immediate promotion is the clear objective.
