£7.8m Jarrod Bowen claim exposes West Ham’s huge Championship advantage

West Ham’s Championship wage bill has put the scale of Nuno Espírito Santo’s promotion challenge into sharp focus, with new analysis suggesting Jarrod Bowen alone earns more each year than the entire playing squads of some second-tier clubs.

West Ham enter the Championship among the favourites for an immediate Premier League return, carrying financial resources few clubs in the division can realistically match.

Fresh figures published by The Guardian, using data from Deloitte and salary estimates from Capology, underline just how significant that advantage could be.

West Ham Championship wage bill dwarfs many rivals

Deloitte’s latest Annual Review of Football Finance shows Championship clubs spent a record £903million on wages in 2024/25, equivalent to 96% of the division’s combined £942m revenue.

West Ham are operating towards the very top of that financial landscape following relegation.

Capology estimates, cited by The Guardian, place the Hammers as having the 15th-highest wage bill in world football outside the Premier League and Saudi Pro League. Fellow relegated sides Wolves and Burnley are also positioned considerably above most Championship rivals.

The most striking comparison surrounds Bowen.

Capology estimates West Ham’s captain earns £7.8m per year. The Guardian notes that figure is greater than the estimated annual squad wage bills at Lincoln City (£5.8m) and Bolton Wanderers (£6.3m).

Those are estimates rather than figures confirmed by West Ham or the players involved, but the comparison illustrates the financial gap Nuno is working with.

Bowen figure increases pressure on Nuno

Relegation forced West Ham to reduce costs, with wage reductions built into several player contracts.

ReadWestHam has previously examined how relegation reshaped the club’s wage bill and Daniel Kretinsky’s Championship rebuild, with Bowen among the most important assets retained for the promotion campaign.

Even after those reductions, West Ham retain advantages that many Championship managers simply do not have.

Nuno can call on established internationals, players with extensive Premier League experience and a recruitment budget capable of funding major additions.

That spending power has been underlined again this week. West Ham have reached a reported £22m agreement with Celtic for Arne Engels, with the Belgium midfielder expected to sign a long-term contract in east London.

A Championship club being able to commit that level of money to one midfielder illustrates the difference between West Ham and much of the division.

Resources alone will not deliver promotion.

The Championship’s record spending also demonstrates how aggressively clubs are prepared to chase the financial rewards of reaching the Premier League. More than half of the division’s clubs in 2024/25 spent more on wages than they generated in revenue, according to Deloitte’s figures.

West Ham cannot hide from promotion expectation

Financial strength therefore gives West Ham an advantage rather than a guarantee.

A 46-game Championship season will test squad depth, consistency and Nuno’s ability to turn a group built largely for Premier League football into a side comfortable carrying the expectation of being favourites.

ReadWestHam’s Championship promotion guide has already highlighted the expectation surrounding Nuno’s side, with West Ham entering the campaign among the leading favourites to go straight back up.

Keeping Bowen is perhaps the clearest example of the resources available.

West Ham have retained a proven Premier League attacker whose estimated individual salary exceeds the entire playing budgets attributed to some Championship clubs.

For Nuno, that is an enormous asset.

It also raises the standard by which this season will be judged. West Ham possess resources most of the division cannot match, and their promotion challenge will inevitably be measured against that advantage.
