West Ham’s striker transfer search leaves Nuno Espírito Santo with a significant decision as Troy Parrott and Bamba Dieng represent two very different ways of strengthening his attack.
Parrott is attracting serious interest after a prolific season with AZ Alkmaar, while former West Ham striker Tony Cottee believes the Republic of Ireland international and the Hammers could form a “perfect partnership”.
The alternative is considerably cheaper. Dieng remains available without a transfer fee after leaving Lorient, having already been offered to West Ham earlier in the summer.
With significant work still required across Nuno’s squad, deciding how much of the remaining budget should be committed to another No.9 could influence the rest of the window.
West Ham striker transfer could require major investment
Parrott has rebuilt his career impressively in the Netherlands.
The 24-year-old scored 31 goals across all competitions last season and has attracted interest from clubs across Europe. The Independent previously reported that AZ value Parrott at around £25million, although strong competition could push the eventual cost higher.
Cottee believes West Ham would provide the striker with the platform he needs.
Speaking about Parrott and West Ham, Cottee told The Irish Sun that the move could be a “perfect partnership”, but stressed that the forward should only consider it if he is going to play regularly.
That creates the first question for Nuno.
Taty Castellanos is already available through the middle and is expected to have an important role this season. West Ham must therefore decide whether another substantial fee on a striker is the best use of their resources.
A midfielder and further attacking quality remain necessary.
Spending £25m or more on Parrott would make sense if West Ham believe he can become their long-term first-choice striker. It becomes harder to justify if Nuno merely wants competition for Castellanos.
Bamba Dieng offers West Ham a different solution
Dieng sits at the other end of the market.
The Senegal international scored 15 times for Lorient last season before becoming a free agent. ReadWestHam previously explained why Dieng could provide an appealing low-cost option.
His representatives have explored opportunities in England, with TEAMtalk reporting that West Ham were among the clubs offered the opportunity to sign him.
There would still be wages and a signing-on fee to consider, while his fitness record requires careful assessment.
Financially, though, the difference is obvious.
Signing Dieng would allow West Ham to retain far more of their budget for midfield or wide attacking reinforcements. Parrott would require a sizeable investment but arrives with greater long-term resale potential and arguably a stronger claim to become Nuno’s main striker.
That is why the decision cannot simply be reduced to which player scored more goals last season.
West Ham need to decide what they actually want from their next forward.
If the club believes Parrott can spearhead both a promotion challenge and a future Premier League side, paying a significant fee becomes easier to defend.
If Nuno is happy to build around Castellanos, a cheaper player capable of sharing the workload may make more sense.
West Ham have the money to pursue either route.
Using it correctly is the more important part.
