West Ham United have been offered the chance to sign Bamba Dieng, presenting Nuno Espírito Santo with an appealing opportunity to strengthen his attack without paying a transfer fee.
The Senegal international is available after leaving Lorient at the end of his contract. He scored 15 goals across all competitions last season, including 10 in Ligue 1.
West Ham are yet to advance their interest, with Hull City and Wrexham reportedly making the strongest early moves. However, Dieng’s recent record and free-agent status make him worthy of serious consideration.
Dieng opportunity arrives at the right time
TEAMtalk reports that Dieng’s representatives offered him to West Ham and Middlesbrough during the early stages of their search for a new club.
Bournemouth also approached the 26-year-old, but he was not convinced by the prospect of holding a squad role. Dieng is instead looking for a club capable of offering him regular involvement.
West Ham can provide a clearer pathway following Callum Wilson’s departure for Brentford. Nuno currently has Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe among his recognised senior options, while Niclas Füllkrug’s long-term position remains unsettled.
Daniel Cummings and Josh Landers will receive opportunities during pre-season, but both are still developing. The club’s assessment of its academy strikers should continue regardless of whether another forward arrives.
Dieng could add proven senior depth without blocking the younger pair permanently. His arrival would allow West Ham to loan one of them out while retaining another around Nuno’s squad.
Numbers support West Ham interest
Dieng’s 2025/26 campaign represented the most productive season of his European career.
According to FotMob, he scored 10 Ligue 1 goals from 1,220 minutes. His return works out at approximately 0.74 goals per 90 minutes.
The striker also supplied one assist and scored five times in the Coupe de France. Those numbers suggest he rediscovered his confidence after several seasons disrupted by injuries and inconsistent minutes.
West Ham should still look beyond the headline goal total. Dieng started only a limited number of league matches and has previously struggled to remain available across an entire campaign.
A Championship promotion challenge demands durability. Nuno needs forwards capable of handling a 46-game league season, physical opponents and a crowded winter schedule.
However, Dieng would not need to carry the attack alone. Castellanos can remain the leading option, with the Senegal forward offering competition, pace and a different threat behind defensive lines.
Free transfer keeps financial risk under control
Dieng’s contract demands and proposed signing-on fee would require careful assessment, but the absence of a transfer fee reduces the initial risk.
West Ham need reinforcements in several positions and cannot direct the majority of their budget towards one centre-forward. A productive free agent would preserve funds for defensive and creative additions.
There will be competition. Hull and Wrexham appear prepared to offer Dieng an important role, while his decision to reject Bournemouth suggests playing time will influence his choice.
West Ham can offer regular opportunities, a realistic route back to the Premier League and a squad built around an immediate promotion challenge.
Dieng is not a guaranteed answer to every attacking problem. His fitness history requires scrutiny and West Ham must establish whether his recent form can continue in English football.
Still, few free agents arrive after scoring 15 goals in a major European league and cup campaign. West Ham have been handed a credible opportunity and should explore it before another club moves beyond their reach.
