£25m West Ham target sends Nuno fresh message with 90-minute display

The Arne Engels transfer remains one to watch for West Ham after the Celtic midfielder completed 90 minutes in Monday’s 1-0 victory over Dundee.

The 22-year-old produced a busy display at Celtic Park while the Hammers continue working on a deal to bring him to east London.

Football Insider previously reported that Engels has agreed personal terms with West Ham. Celtic have rejected offers for the Belgium international, but negotiations between the clubs have continued with a £25million package reportedly required.

ReadWestHam reported on 3 August that West Ham are expected to progress their move for Engels. The Hammers are preparing an improved proposal after their first two attempts failed to convince Celtic.

Arne Engels transfer target shows what he could offer West Ham

Football Insider analysed Engels’ performance against Dundee, with the midfielder completing 84 per cent of his passes from 67 touches. He also created two chances and played the full match as Celtic opened their Scottish Premiership campaign with three points.

Engels contributed without the ball as well. He registered four clearances, four recoveries and one tackle, although he won three of his seven duels and collected a late yellow card.

His attacking numbers were less productive on the night. Engels had one attempt and missed a big chance, but his involvement across different areas of the pitch highlighted the all-round qualities West Ham are targeting.

Nuno Espírito Santo needs another central midfielder after losing Mateus Fernandes earlier this summer. Freddie Potts has also now completed a permanent move to Club Brugge, further changing the options available before the Championship season begins.

Engels produced seven goals and eight assists in 46 appearances last season and remains an important player for Celtic. His involvement against Dundee shows Martin O’Neill is prepared to use him while negotiations continue.

For West Ham, the latest performance offered another look at a player they hope will become part of Nuno’s midfield. The transfer still depends on the clubs reaching an agreement, but the Hammers appear determined to keep pushing.
