The James Ward-Prowse West Ham role has changed dramatically after the midfielder reportedly cleared the air with Nuno Espírito Santo ahead of the new season.
Ward-Prowse spent much of last season outside Nuno’s plans before joining Burnley on loan in January. The midfielder had trained away from West Ham’s main group and was told he would not feature after Nuno arrived in September.
However, Claret and Hugh reports that the pair have since held a clear-the-air meeting. Ward-Prowse’s regular pre-season involvement suggests he has been reintegrated into the senior squad.
Neither man has publicly confirmed a full reconciliation. Nevertheless, Ward-Prowse now has an unexpected opportunity to influence West Ham’s promotion campaign.
James Ward-Prowse West Ham role could become important
West Ham’s midfield has lost considerable experience and creativity during the summer.
Mateus Fernandes has joined Tottenham, while Edson Álvarez is expected to leave West Ham. Tomáš Souček is also unavailable after suffering ankle ligament damage.
Those absences leave Mohamadou Kanté, Freddie Potts and several academy players competing for central roles. Ward-Prowse can provide stability alongside one of West Ham’s younger midfielders.
He remains comfortable receiving possession from defenders and switching play towards the flanks. His experience could also help West Ham manage difficult Championship away matches, where control and patience will often carry more value than attacking risk.
Nuno must use him centrally, though. Ward-Prowse started from the left against Rangers, limiting his ability to dictate possession and influence the game.
Set pieces could transform tight matches
Ward-Prowse’s greatest contribution may arrive from dead-ball situations.
West Ham will regularly face opponents defending with numbers behind the ball. Matches against compact Championship sides could be decided by one corner or free-kick rather than sustained attacking dominance.
Ward-Prowse has already provided reminders of his delivery during pre-season. He scored against Stevenage and forced saves from direct free-kicks against Southend and Rangers.
His service could benefit Max Kilman, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Taty Castellanos. Jarrod Bowen would also gain more freedom if opponents were forced to treat every foul around the penalty area as a serious threat.
Nuno still needs athleticism around Ward-Prowse
Reintegrating Ward-Prowse does not remove West Ham’s need for another midfielder.
He lacks the recovery speed required to protect large spaces on his own. Nuno must therefore partner him with a mobile ball-winner such as Kanté or add another athletic midfielder before the window closes.
ReadWestHam’s predicted team against Magdeburg placed Ward-Prowse alongside Kanté. That partnership could balance experience, passing quality and defensive energy.
The Championship schedule will also demand rotation. Ward-Prowse does not need to start every match to become valuable again.
His passing, leadership and set-piece delivery give West Ham qualities their current squad lacks. A professional reconciliation with Nuno could therefore turn an unwanted player into an important part of the promotion push.
