  • The Hammers are now two points above the relegation zone
  • Mateus Fernandes is determined to keep the team up

West Ham United took another step in the right direction as they drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace on Monday night. The point takes Nuno Espirito Santo’s team to two points above the drop zone, putting more pressure on Tottenham Hotspur.

West Ham did have the better chances, but Crystal Palace fought back and in the end both side’s settled for a draw. Mateus Fernandes, who looked his usual self on the night, has told the club’s official website that he team go into every game for the win, but in the Premier League, no game is easy.

“We always go into games looking to get the win, but it’s a point and every point matters.

“We knew they were in good form and had had some good results, but I think we started well in the first half. We created some chances and in these kinds of games you need to make them count, but I think their goalkeeper, Henderson, had a very good game.

“Every team in the Premier League has quality players, and every game is tough. I think we showed fight, quality and spirit to get a point, but we always want to do more because we know this Club belongs in the Premier League, and it’s our mission to make sure we stay here.

“The gaffer has told us this is our job and our mission, and now we have to recover and get ready for the next game. We can only focus on what we can control, and we have to be fully prepared because we know anything can happen.

“The next game is going to be very important for us. We’re looking forward to being back at home, and we’re going to need the fans as always because together we want to fight to make sure we’re in the Premier League next season.”

Mateus Fernandes’s stellar West Ham season

This season began like a slow burn for Fernandes, but since the appointment of Nuno, the Portugal international has come into his own. Now one of the first names on the Hammers team sheet, the 21-year-old controls the tempo for the team, connecting the defence with the attack.

With performances comes interested, but Fernandes is full focused on keeping West Ham in the Premier League this season.
