West Ham United are making strides in their survival fight every matchday. A 4-0 win over fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers saw the Hammers out of the Premier League’s bottom three, a place they have stayed after Tottenham Hotspur failed to win on Saturday.
With six games to go, West Ham‘s Premier League future is very much still uncertain, but Nuno Espirito Santo’s team look to make more in roads on Monday night, as they take on Crystal Palace. With uncertainty on the horizon for the club, so is the future of a number of players.
The club will need to sell this summer, regardless of their division, making contract renewals an even trickier proposition. The Hammers want to bring in a number of players, but will need to move on some high-earners no matter what.
One player who heads into the summer with a year left, is veteran Tomas Soucek. The midfielder is not at the top of the earning chart, but at 31 some would like to see him move on and yet, there are many reasons why that is exactly what the Iron’s should not do.
Tomas Soucek’s importance to West Ham
There’s no hiding that this hasn’t been one of Soucek’s best seasons in a West Ham shirt, but it has not changed his importance to the team. All season long, the side has lacked someone to do the hard yards. Under Graham Potter, both Guido Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse failed to take over, leaving the midfield limp and easy to penetrate.
The same could be said when Nuno came through the door at the London Stadium. The midfield lacked presence, with Mateus Fernandes getting run over and his ability to create being quashed. Now, with Soucek back in the side alongside the Portugal international, things are clicking for the Hammers.

| Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| 33 | 5 | 0 |
It’s not just his tackling that help’s Nuno’s team. The 31-year-old cares just as much as anyone and you can see that. From his goal against Manchester United to another one in the win over Newcastle United, the midfielder helps at both ends of the pitch and clearly still has a lot to give.
What’s next for Tomas Soucek?
Going forward, changes at West Ham will be made but there is space for Soucek. If the Hammers stay up, they will need calm, experienced heads to avoid they end up in this position again, and the Czechia captain is exactly that.
At 31, Souceks priorities will be playing at the top level for as long as possible, alongside prolonging his international career. West Ham can give him that and he can give them invaluable experience that stops them from ending up near the drop again.
