West Ham United held on to earn a 1-1 draw with title chasing Manchester City. The point takes the Hammers out of the bottom three tonight, for the first time in 2026, something they hope does not change tomorrow.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s team survived wave after wave of Manchester City attack to keep the ball out of their net and force the visitors back north with just a point. Pep Guardiola’s team will see the result as a huge blow to their title ambitions, but the draw could be huge for West Ham and their survival effort.
Konstantinos Mavropanos was the man to get the equalizer, cancelling out Bernardo Silva’s opener within just minutes. West Ham would go on to put in a superb defensive performance that takes them into 17th for the first time in 112 days.
Nuno made two changes from his last Premier League line-up, bringing in Pablo Felipe after he played in the FA Cup on Monday night and reverting to a back five, with Mavropanos returning to the XI.
First-half
City set out on the front foot, knowing only a victory would do for their title ambitions. Four corners in quick succession, all rebuffed by West Ham‘s stout defensive unit.
The away side kept the pressure on, keeping the Hammers camped in their own half throughout the opening exchanges.
Omar Marmoush drilled a free-kick just pass the left-hand post, before Erling Haaland couldn’t turn Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross home.
Nuno’s team would fall behind not long after as Silva’s cross wrongfooted Mads Hermansen as it looped over the big Dane into the back of the net.
The lead lasted just moments, with West Ham firing back from a Jarrod Bowen corner. Mavropanos rose highest, thumping his header past the helpless Gianluigi Donnarumma.
As half-time approached, the game’s tempo picked up. Haaland ran through on goal, teeing up Antoine Semenyo, who couldn’t convert the finish. Matheus Nunes would do the same seconds later.
Second-half
City carried on as they had all game. Omar Marmoush dragging a shot wide on the 50 minutes mark.
The visitors biggest chance came ten minutes later as Rayan Cherki played a through ball the Haaland. One-on-one with Hermansen, the big Dane made the stop.
Jeremy Doku then tried his look from distance, before Haaland stuck a low effort wide of the post. Soungoutou Magassa then made a last-ditch tackle to deny Nunes from Rodri’s threaded pass.
Into the final 15 minutes and either side could have won the game, with City pushing for a breakthrough but leaving themselves short-handed at the back. Hermansen made another save to deny Phil Foden.
Rodri had his free-kick tipped onto the bar before Haaland missed yet another chance from the resulting corner. Semenyo and Haaland both continued to test West Ham’s shot stopper but could not find a way through.
In the dying moments, Mavropanos threw his body to stop a Haaland shot before doing the same from Nico O’Reilly, as Marc Guehi then blasted over, securing the Hammers a crucial point.
