The situation: How midweek’s results change West Ham’s survival chances

West Ham United left Craven Cottage with all three points as they beat Fulham 1-0 on Wednesday night. Crysencio Summerville got the all important goal as the Hammers bounced back from defeat at Liverpool, getting their survival efforts back on track.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team got back to their hard-nose defending, holding firm upon every wave of Fulham attacker. Summerville and Jarrod Bowen combined to pounce on Bernd Leno’s mistake and help the Irons to a win across London.

The result has taken them level with Nottingham Forest, only inside the bottom three as West Ham head into the final nine games of the league season.

The situation could have been all the better had Manchester City managed to get a last-minute goal they were pushing for. Nottingham Forest drew 2-2 with the Cityzens after being behind twice, showing that they too, are in this fight for the long run.

16th, 15th, 14th

Tottenham Hotspur’s pain continued as they lost to now-13th placed Crystal Palace. Micky Van de Ven was sent off Ismaela Sarr netted twice in the 3-1 Eagles win.

That loss leaves Spurs just a point above West Ham and Forest, bringing them right into the relegation fight. The win for Palace takes them to 38 points and likely means they have played themselves out of trouble this season.

15th placed Leeds United are three points above the Hammers and finally lost under the lights at Elland Road in a midweek game. Habib Diarra scored the only goal as Sunderland headed back north with all three points. Leeds are not out of the woods yet.

In 14th, Brighton & Hove Albion lost a hard fought game with league leaders Arsenal 1-0. The loss has seen them drop a few places, but the Seagulls are on 37 points and would take some catching for anyone below 30 points.

The bottom two

Scott Parker’s Burnley lost once again, this time in less controversial circumstances, as Everton breezed past them 2-0. The result leaves the Clarets nine points behind West Ham and almost certainly out of it barring somewhat of a miracle.

Wolverhampton Wanderers continued their revival under Rob Edwards, beating Liverpool 2-1 in a game full of late drama. The win means Wolves have won back-to-back games for the first time this season as they build for what is most likely a season in the Championship next year.

Wolves move to 16 points, still 12 points below West Ham.
