Mark Lawrenson predicts close fought contest as West Ham face Aston Villa

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has been having his say ahead of West Ham against Aston Villa this afternoon (Sunday, October 31).

Irons boss David Moyes will be hoping for a Halloween treat as the Scot reaches 999 games in football management.

The Hammers can further cement their spot inside the Premier League top four with victory whilst the hosts at Villa Park will be looking to move clear of the relegation zone.

Writing in his weekly BBC Sport prediction column, Lawrenson doesn’t expect Moyes’ men to dominate in the Midlands.

West Ham boss David Moyes can do no wrong at the moment, beating Spurs last weekend and then knocking holders Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup in midweek. Moyes might not get things all his own way on Sunday though. I am expecting a much better performance from Aston Villa than we saw from them against Arsenal last week. Put it this way, they need one.

Lawrenson went on to predict a 1-1 draw before suggesting Moyes ‘might even buy me a drink’ when he reaches 1,000 next weekend against Liverpool due to a long-standing friendship.

This is a golden opportunity for the Hammers to stamp their authority on the race for Europe this season.

Albeit a long way off the crunch period, West Ham would have to be considered as contenders with a win on a tricky away day.

Moyes will be boosted by the return of Vladimir Coufal to the fold whilst Alex Kral could also return from illness.

matchday.
