Former Premier League striker has labelled West Ham midfielder Declan Rice as a ‘top class’ operator.

The 22-year-old has started the new season in fine form and looks set for another superb campaign at the heart of the Hammers’ side.

Following an eye-catching solo goal in Europe last week, Rice was inspirational in defeat on Sunday at the hands of Manchester United.

Speaking to Football Insider in the wake of those back to back performances, Whelan was full of praise for the Englishman.

Rice is a brilliant player. He is top class, there is no doubt about that. He stands out like a sore thumb in that position. I’d say he is one of the top two holding midfield players in the Premier League. He really is just getting better and better. On the ball, driving with the ball, passing, decision making and tackling are all areas he is continually improving in. He is also a great athlete. West Ham have made massive strides over the past 18 months and Declan Rice has been a big part of that.

The 26 times capped Iron is currently averaging a remarkable 7.30 rating from five Premier League appearances this season (Sofascore).

That figure is ahead of the likes of Fabinho, N’Golo Kante and Wilfried Ndidi – others who would lay claim to being the elite defensive midfielder in the top flight.

Valued at a rapidly rising £63million (Transfermarkt), Rice is looking more and more at home amongst the elite level with each passing week.

Already an established player for both club and country, the London-born ace is certainly in the conversation to be the best in his position.

Adding new facets to his game seemingly all the time, West Ham have a real gem on their hands and will be desperate to cling on for as long as possible.
