Former Premier League striker Noel Whelan believes Southampton star Danny Ings would ‘relish’ the opportunity to play for West Ham in Europe

This comes after a report from The Athletic claimed that the Hammers have shown an interest in the 28-year-old.

Believed to be stalling on signing a new deal on the south coast, the former Liverpool striker could be on the move this summer.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan claimed the three-times capped England man would make the move to east London.

They had a fantastic season last year. They are looking to do business early this summer. We already know they let Sebastien Haller go last season. They need to replace the target man. We know there’s no one better as a target man than Danny Ings. He can hold the ball so well. They have some great wide players at West Ham and Ings is a player who can be a danger from those crosses. He’s got an eye for a goal, he knows the Premier League and he’s a proven goalscorer. Once again, David Moyes is trying to sign the best British players. Ings would be relishing the opportunity to potentially play in Europe.

Last season Ings scored 12 Premier League goals and registered another four assists in 28 outings.

Overall the Englishman has netted 55 goals in 140 top-flight appearances and has previously been described as ‘first-class’ by Clinton Morrison.

Signing Ings would give David Moyes the ideal striking solution.

Valued at £19.8million and in the final 12 months of a contract at St Mary’s (Transfermarkt), the ex-Bournemouth youth star is going to become available at a bargain price for somebody.

With Europa League football and an almost guaranteed spot in the first-team available, the Irons need to be among the frontrunners.
